If you're looking for love, you have lots of company. Jerry Seinfeld once said that everyone seems to want to meet someone and we're surrounded by people, but somehow or other we never seem to meet anyone (I'm paraphrasing of course). It's true though - if you're really looking for love, you'll have a hard time even though many people say they are. However, it doesn't have to be that way.
The first thing you need to think about when you're looking for love is exactly what it is that you want out of a relationship. In other words, what does looking for love mean to you? Are you looking for sex and maybe an occasional companion? If so, you're looking for something very different from the person who says they want someone to spend their life with.

Maybe you're older and you're just looking for someone to be with and sex doesn't really matter to you. That's a completely different situation from the 20 something who wants to fall in love but who is also very interested in having lots of hot sex with the man or woman they fall in love with.
Whatever it is that you want out of your relationship, you need to define it and set some red lines. If sex is important to you, then the person can't be what you call ugly. If doing things together is important to you, make sure the person has lots in common with you. If you just want someone who is a decent person, well, define for yourself what that means. Everyone has a different opinion.
Once you make your decision what it is you are looking for and what your red lines are, just be honest. Tell people on the dating site you've signed up for that you are looking for love and define (briefly) what that is. Don't be afraid to use the "m" word if that's your ultimate goal. Yes, you'll scare away the people who would never dream of getting married, but let's face it, do you really want that kind of an uphill battle? Why handicap yourself before you even go out of the gate?
Be sure to also say exactly what you like to do, both sexually and out of bed, if that's important to you. However, whatever you do, be brief about it. No one wants to read your life story online. Just put down a title of "Looking for love" and then put in a few lines about what that means. The rest is, as they say, up to you and fate.
